In a candid Vanity Fair cover interview published March 18, 2025, Gwyneth Paltrow revealed surprising details about her intimate scenes with co-star Timothée Chalamet in their upcoming film "Marty Supreme." The 52-year-old actress made headlines when she disclosed the extent of their on-screen relationship, stating plainly, "We have a lot of sex in this movie."
The film, directed by Josh Safdie of "Uncut Gems" fame, tells a fictional story inspired by professional ping-pong player Marty Reisman. Chalamet, 29, portrays the main character Marty Mauser, while Paltrow plays his love interest, described as the wife of someone in the "ping-pong mafia." Their characters develop a connection that Paltrow characterized as "transactional for them both."
Production photos captured the pair kissing on set in New York City in October 2024, generating significant buzz. Paltrow later addressed her husband Brad Falchuk's feelings about the scenes, noting he was "unthreatened" despite acknowledging Chalamet as "awesome." She also mentioned during a November appearance on "The Tonight Show" that her "mom group texts were fire" after the kissing photos went viral.
Paltrow expressed particular surprise at the modern film industry's use of intimacy coordinators, professionals who help choreograph and ensure comfort during intimate scenes. "I was like, 'Girl, I'm from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera's on,'" she told Vanity Fair, revealing she ultimately declined the coordinator's assistance.
"We said, 'I think we're good. You can step a little bit back,'" Paltrow recounted. "I would feel, as an artist, very stifled by that." Her comments reflect a generational shift in Hollywood's approach to filming intimate content, with established actors like Paltrow having different comfort levels than newer performers.
The Oscar winner offered praise for her younger co-star, describing Chalamet as "a thinking man's sex symbol" and "a man who takes his work really seriously and is a fun partner." Their 23-year age difference was not lost on Paltrow, who joked, "I'm 109 years old. You're 14."
"Marty Supreme" marks Paltrow's return to significant acting work after a six-year hiatus. While she appeared in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," she considers this her first "serious" role since 2010's "Country Strong." According to Safdie, "She's a movie star. I say that in the cosmic sense. She's got a gravitational pull that only a camera can depict."
The film, which also features Tyler, the Creator and Fran Drescher as Chalamet's mother, is scheduled for theatrical release on Christmas Day 2025 through A24. For Paltrow, whose recent focus has been her lifestyle brand Goop, this project represents a notable return to her acting roots with a role that demands significant vulnerability and artistic commitment.
