Pop icon Gwen Stefani recently shared an intimate glimpse into her successful marriage with country music star Blake Shelton. During an appearance on "The Drew Barrymore Show," the 55-year-old singer revealed that faith plays a central role in their relationship.
"Best advice would probably be, make sure you have a third party," She told Drew Barrymore, gesturing upward to show she was referring to God. This spiritual foundation has become a cornerstone of their marriage, something the devout Catholic recommends to other couples.
The pair's love story began in 2014 when they met as coaches on NBC's "The Voice." At that time, both were navigating difficult divorces—Stefani from rocker Gavin Rossdale and Shelton from country singer Miranda Lambert. By July 2015, both had finalized their respective divorces.
Their early relationship wasn't without challenges. She also previously described that period to People Magazine as "chaotic," revealing, "There was a point where I was like, 'I can't even talk to you. This is insane. I already have enough problems.'"
Music ultimately became their bridge. Shelton wooed Stefani by sending her a half-written song that needed completion. Their collaboration resulted in the 2016 duet "Go Ahead and Break My Heart," marking the beginning of several successful musical partnerships.
"I think he really wanted to impress me, because he doesn't really write songs as much as he used to," Stefani explained. "And I love writing songs. That's everything to me."
The couple tied the knot in July 2021 in an intimate ceremony on Shelton's Oklahoma ranch. Their shared faith has transformed Shelton, who once told Fox News that Stefani inspired him to "believe in God now more than I ever have in my life" and attend church regularly.
"The biggest part of that is just how [Gwen] came into my life and now our relationship," Shelton shared. "If you take God out of it, it doesn't make sense. If you put God into it, everything that's happened with us makes sense."
Despite their different musical backgrounds, the couple enjoys simple pleasures together. When asked about her preference for date nights, Stefani laughed, "For sure in. I'm literally like—couch, blanket, cookies, chips."
Shelton has embraced his role as stepfather to Stefani's three sons—Kingston, Zuma, and Apollo. In 2022, he stepped away from "The Voice" after 23 seasons to focus on family. "Even though I'm a stepparent, I take that job very seriously," he told People magazine. "The kids see me as a very important person in their life."
Their latest musical collaboration, "Purple Irises," appears on Stefani's newest album, "Bouquet." Through music, faith, and family, Stefani and Shelton continue to demonstrate that sometimes the most unexpected pairings create the strongest harmonies.
