Kiernan Shipka and Cole Sprouse are set to topline Goodbye Girl, a new romantic comedy from Amazon MGM Studios and Gulfstream Pictures that is officially moving into production this week in New Orleans. The project brings together two well known young actors in a character driven story that blends humor, romance, and emotional honesty.

Goodbye Girl is directed by Oran Zegman, marking her feature follow up to Honor Society, the Paramount Plus coming of age comedy that starred Angourie Rice and Gaten Matarazzo. With this new film, Zegman returns to familiar territory by focusing on sharp character dynamics and modern relationship themes, this time within the framework of a romantic comedy.

The film centers on Jess, played by Shipka, who works as a professional heartbreaker. Her unusual job involves ending relationships on behalf of people who are too afraid to do it themselves. When she is hired by a nervous bride to dump her groom just days before their wedding, the assignment quickly goes off course. Not only does Jess struggle to carry out the breakup, but she unexpectedly falls deeply in love with the groom, played by Sprouse. The situation sets up a story driven by moral conflict, humor, and the emotional risks that come with genuine connection.

The script was written by Danielle Hoover and David Monahan, based on a story developed by Hoover, Monahan, and Jessica Elbaum. The film is produced by Mike Karz and William Bindley of Gulfstream Pictures, who also provided part of the financing. They are joined by producers Dawn Bierschwal and Ryan Lewis of The RAD Lab, along with Daniel Wagner.

In a statement, Karz and Bindley described Goodbye Girl as exactly the kind of elevated, character focused romantic comedy Gulfstream aims to support. They praised Shipka and Sprouse for bringing charm, wit, and emotional honesty to their roles, and highlighted Zegman’s confident and fresh directorial voice. They also expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with the broader creative team behind the project.

Shipka continues to build a diverse and high profile filmography. She is currently appearing in the fourth season of HBO Max’s Industry and will next be seen starring alongside Dave Franco and O’Shea Jackson Jr. In The Shitheads, a comedy from Macon Blair that recently premiered at Sundance. Her recent credits also include Longlegs, Totally Killer, and the critically acclaimed The Last Showgirl. She is represented by WME, Anonymous Content, and Sloane Offer Weber and Dern.

Sprouse will next appear opposite Matthew McConaughey in The Rivals of Amziah King, a crime thriller that premiered at last year’s SXSW Film Festival. His previous film work includes Five Feet Apart, Lisa Frankenstein, and Moonshot. He is represented by WME, Entertainment 360, and DLA Piper.

Goodbye Girl marks the fifth Gulfstream Pictures title acquired by Amazon MGM Studios. Previous collaborations include Pretty Lethal, Upgraded, The Other Zoey, and One Fast Move. Gulfstream is also producing Honeymoon with Harry, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Kevin Costner, for the studio. Together, these projects reflect an ongoing partnership focused on commercially appealing, talent driven films.

With production now underway, Goodbye Girl positions itself as another notable entry in Amazon MGM’s growing slate of romantic and character centered features.
