Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, commonly known as Coachella has a rich history dating back into its inception in 1999.

The festival was founded by Paul Tollet and Rick Van Santen of Goldenvoice. A subsidiary of AEG live. The idea was to create a multi-day event that would feature various musical genre, including rock, indie, hip-hop, electronic music with art installations and other attractions.

The first Coachella took place in October 9-10th1999 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. The lineup included headliners such as Beck, The Chemical Brothers and Rage against the Machine. Despite low attendances, the Inaugural Festival in 1999 received critical acclaim.

In the early 2000s, Coachella began to grow in popularity, attracting larger crowds and expanding to accommodate more stages and diverse programming. The festival became known for its iconic performances and trendsetting fashions. Over the years, Coachella has been the site for many memorable performances and moments that have become part of musical history. These includes performances by artists such as Madonna, Prince, Daft Punk and Beyoncé.

Coachella has been significant impact on popular cultures, influencing trends in music, fashion and lifestyle. The festival influence extends beyond its musical lineups, with its art installations, fashion scene and celebrity sightings shaping cultural conversations. In addition to the main festival in Indio, Coachella has expanded its reach with spin-off events such as ‘’Desert Trip’’ in 2016, featuring classic rock acts like The Rolling Stone, Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney.

 The festival also launched ‘’Coachella Cruel World’’ in 2020 which was later postponed due to Covid-19 pandemic. In the recent years, Coachella has placed greater emphasis on sustainability and social responsibility. The festival has implemented initiatives to reduce environmental impact, promote diversity and inclusion and support from local communities.

Beyoncé [2018] Beyoncé’s headlining performances in 2018, commonly referred to as ‘’Beychella’’, was a historic moment. She delivered a visually stunning and politically charged set that celebrated black culture and female empowerment.

Radiohead [2017] Radiohead’s performance in 2017 was memorable for its powerful and emotionally charged renditions of their iconic songs. Despite technical difficulties the band delivered an unforgettable set.

Kendrick Lamar [2017] Kendrick Lamar’s headlining set in 2017 showcased his dynamic stage presence and socially conscious lyrics. The performance was praised for its energy and powerful message.

LCD Soundsystem [2016] LCD Sound system reunion performance in 2016 was highly anticipated and lived up to expectations. The band delivered an energetic and nostalgic set that delighted fans. Coachella has become more than just a musical festival. It is a cultural phenomenon that draws people from all over the world. Coachella has evolved into more than just music festival; it’s a cultural institution that represents a convergence of music, art, fashion and community making it highly anticipated event each year.
