Taylor Swift is adding another first to her long list of MTV Video Music Awards achievements, with the singer set to receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the 2026 VMAs.
MTV and CBS announced Monday, Sept. 21, that Swift will be the first recipient of the new honor, which recognizes artists whose work behind the camera has "expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling."
The award celebrates a side of Swift's career that has grown increasingly important over the years. While she initially became known for writing and starring in her music videos, she gradually took greater control of their creative direction.
Swift began experimenting with directing in 2010 when she co-directed the video for "Mine" with Roman White. She later made her solo directorial debut with "The Man" in 2020, a move she previously described as happening partly "out of necessity."
"I was writing my videos for years," Swift explained in a 2022 Variety interview, recalling how she eventually decided to take the director's chair herself.
The experience quickly became a major part of her creative process.
"I just thought, 'This is more fulfilling than I ever could imagine,'" she said. "I'm inching my way along taking on more responsibility."
Since then, Swift has directed more than 15 projects, including "cardigan," "willow," "Anti-Hero," "Bejeweled," "Lavender Haze," "Karma," "I Can See You," "Fortnight," "The Fate of Ophelia" and "Opalite."
Her directing work also expanded into longer-form storytelling with All Too Well: The Short Film in 2021. Starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien, the project won multiple honors, including the Grammy for Best Music Video.
Swift is already expected to have a major presence at this year's VMAs, with nine nominations, including Video of the Year for "The Fate of Ophelia." She is also nominated for Best Direction for "Opalite," along with categories recognizing her work in cinematography, editing, choreography and visual effects.
The new Artist Director Honors adds another distinction to Swift's VMA record. She currently has 30 VMA wins and is tied with Beyoncé as the most-awarded artist in the ceremony's history. She has also won Video of the Year five times.
The 2026 VMAs will take place Sept. 27 in Los Angeles, with Snoop Dogg serving as host. Madonna is scheduled to open the ceremony with a performance, marking her return to the VMAs stage after more than two decades.
