Coi Leray, daughter of rapper and music executive Benzino is an American rapper and singer from New Jersey. She began her music career in 2018 with the release of her mixtape, Everythingcoz. She is signed with Karriem Mack’s 1801 records, in a joint venture with uptown and republic records to release her second mixtape EC2 in 2019.
‘Blick Blick’ featuring Nicki Minaj was released on March 18, 2022. With the help of the feature, Coi claimed her first top 10 hit on Billboard’s hot RnB/ hip-hop songs chart. During it’s release week, it obtained the week’s best digital sale and landing the highest debut song that week. The release came after complications with the rollout. Benzino started a rumour claiming that Nicki pulled her verse of the song.
Taking to Twitter to talk about the drama and answer a fan’s question, Nicki said, “ I did pull it but the label hit me going hard. But really l had a private convo with Coi & that’s what changed my mind. Not the label. I just felt bad that she was robbed of telling the world in her way at her time.”
“Mu dad has to realise that I’m my own person. Not only am l an artist, but I’m a young black woman first and he has to understand his actions and what he does can possibly affect me overall as a brand,” Coi tweeted after the drama. Benzino congratulated his daughter and agrees to her independence.
Coi Leray and Nicki started disagreements after fans felt like Coi was shading Nicki by posting a shady comment after Nicki joined Tiktok for the first time. Nicki started going live with millions of her fans to promote her latest album ‘Pink Friday 2’. Coi wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, “Lmaoo crazy how everybody who shitted on Tiktok back then is eating it up now. For the longest time, Coi has been considered a Tiktok artist since her music only charts on Tiktok due to Tiktok dances and challenges.
On Tuesday, 30 April 2024, Coi responds to a fan who claimed that she used Nicki for a collaboration then turned on her. Coi said that she and Nicki are on good terms after speaking behind the scenes to clear the misunderstanding.
“Me and Nicki spoke behind the scenes, personally, and l never brought that to the public. Business ain’t work out, that’s okay. I still wish her nothing but the best and Blick blick is one of the greatest videos that will be in history,” Coi wrote on X. She also says that labels are behind female rap beefs and that they benefit from female rappers going at each other.
