The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominations are filled with exciting surprises, with Conclave and Emilia Pérez leading the pack. Both films are nominated for Best Film, alongside others like The Brutalist, Anora, Dune: Part Two, and A Complete Unknown, showing a strong mix of genres. Notably, Wicked, despite its seven nominations, was excluded from the Best Film category, while Conclave and Emilia Pérez each garnered 12 and 11 nominations respectively.

In the performance categories, newcomers like Karla Sofía Gascón, Mikey Madison, and Jeremy Strong are vying for the top awards. Gascón's role in Emilia Pérez is especially celebrated, with the actress securing a Best Actress nomination alongside seasoned stars like Cynthia Erivo from Wicked and Demi Moore for her role in The Substance. The Best Actor category features notable names such as Ralph Fiennes from Conclave and Adrien Brody from The Brutalist, while Kieran Culkin and Sebastian Stan are also in the running for Best Supporting Actor.

Interestingly, Wicked's Ariana Grande is also nominated for Best Supporting Actress, facing competition from Isabella Rossellini (Conclave) and Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez), adding a star-studded dynamic to the race. The casting choices in Anora and The Apprentice have earned them nominations, with Kneecap's recognition for original screenplay further boosting the indie scene.

In a year marked by diversity, Kneecap, the Irish-language film about a rap trio's rise to fame, stands out. While many were surprised by Washington's lack of recognition and the snubbing of Luca Guadagnino's films, the BAFTA nominations reflect a robust mix of genres, from musicals to body horrors and biopics. The BAFTA Film Awards this year, which will take place on February 16, promise to be one of the most competitive and diverse ceremonies in recent years.

Despite challenges posed by external events, including wildfires in Los Angeles, the nominations have demonstrated a strong commitment to celebrating cinematic excellence. The ceremony will be hosted by David Tennant and promises to honor both established legends and rising stars in the film industry.
