Authorities have officially called off a portion of their search for Travis Decker in Idaho's Sawtooth National Forest, after discovering that a man suspected to be the fugitive father was, in fact, a fellow hiker with similar features. Decker remains the subject of a nationwide manhunt following the chilling discovery of his three young daughters—Paityn, 9; Evelyn, 8; and Olivia, 5—found suffocated near his abandoned truck at a Leavenworth, Washington campground on June 2.
The Bear Creek confusion began when vacationers reported seeing a man matching Decker's description. That sighting sparked a swift response from U.S. Marshals and local officials, who later confirmed the man in question was not Decker but a cooperative hiker with a beard, dark features, and similar tattoos. Authorities have now withdrawn from that particular search zone, though efforts to locate Decker remain active across the country.
The 32-year-old military veteran is wanted not only for three counts of first-degree murder but also for kidnapping, after he failed to return the girls to their mother, Whitney Decker, following a scheduled visitation. The Chelan County Sheriff's Office stated that they have no evidence indicating Decker is either alive or dead, but until he is located or recovered, their search will not stop.
New DNA evidence has confirmed that a single male individual was responsible, further consolidating Decker as the primary suspect. His online activity, which includes searches about fleeing to Canada, has raised additional alarms. In the wake of the tragedy, authorities continue to thank the public for leads, emphasizing the role vigilant citizens play in cases like this.
While the false sighting in Idaho may have momentarily diverted resources, it also underscores the urgency and vigilance surrounding the case. The memory of Paityn, Evelyn, and Olivia weighs heavily on investigators as they continue their pursuit. For now, Travis Decker remains at large, with officials urging anyone with information to come forward immediately.
