First Lady Melania Trump announced Friday that eight Ukrainian children separated from their families during the Russia-Ukraine war have been reunited with their relatives following what she described as "open communication" with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Speaking from the Grand Foyer of the White House, Mrs. Trump said she personally reached out to Putin in August through a handwritten letter, delivered by President Donald Trump during his Alaska summit with the Russian leader. She said Putin later responded in writing, and that their dialogue led to the safe return of the children.

"Each child has lived in turmoil because of this war," the First Lady said, standing before a row of American flags. "Eight children have been rejoined with their families during the past 24 hours. This progress reminds us that even in conflict, humanity can prevail."

According to Mrs. Trump, three of the children had been taken across the Russian border amid front-line fighting, while the remaining five were separated within Ukraine. Russian and Ukrainian officials reportedly worked together to facilitate their return, providing detailed reports, photographs, and proof of identity. The U.S. government has since verified the information.

Her announcement follows the International Criminal Court's 2023 arrest warrant against Putin for alleged war crimes involving the deportation of Ukrainian children—accusations Russia denies. Rights groups estimate that nearly 19,500 children have been removed from Ukraine since 2022, though the true figure is believed to be higher.

Mrs. Trump said her outreach was guided by compassion, not politics. "Every child shares the same quiet dreams in their heart," she said. "They dream of love, possibility, and safety from danger."

The First Lady's statement marks the first known cooperation between Washington and Moscow on child repatriation since Russia's invasion began. She confirmed that more reunifications are planned, calling the initiative "an ongoing humanitarian mission."

"I will continue to work for transparency and communication between families until every displaced child returns home," Mrs. Trump said, adding that she was "deeply encouraged" by Putin's written response.
