Former All-Pro NFL running back Doug Martin has died following an altercation with police officers during an investigation into a home break-in in Oakland. The Oakland Police Department confirmed that Martin, 36, became unresponsive while being taken into custody early Saturday morning and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
According to police reports, officers responded to a break-in and encountered Martin, who allegedly resisted arrest, leading to what they described as a "brief struggle." No further details have been released pending an autopsy by the Alameda County Coroner's Office. Martin's family, requesting privacy, expressed deep grief as authorities and city officials extended their condolences.
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee issued a statement mourning the loss of the athlete, describing him as "an Oaklander who had a distinguished NFL career and tragically passed away Saturday morning." The cause of death remains under investigation.
Doug Martin rose to fame as a first-round draft pick in 2012, selected 31st overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after an outstanding college career at Boise State. His rookie season was a breakout year, rushing for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns, earning him a Pro Bowl selection. Three years later, Martin repeated the feat with another Pro Bowl appearance and a First-Team All-Pro title after amassing 1,402 yards and six touchdowns.
Over his NFL career, Martin recorded 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns, along with 148 receptions for 1,207 yards. Known as the "Muscle Hamster" for his compact power and agility, he was a fan favorite in Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers released a heartfelt statement, describing Martin as a player who "made a lasting impact on our franchise."
In 2021, he was honored as one of the top 50 players in the team's 50-year history. Though his post-football life had been largely private, his death has rekindled public discussion about athlete well-being and encounters with law enforcement.
