In a stunning twist that has shaken the sports world, NBA player Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups are among dozens arrested in an FBI probe into illegal sports betting and mafia-linked poker games. The massive federal operation, spanning 11 states, exposed corruption that prosecutors called "one of the most brazen sports scandals in modern history."

Rozier, a Miami Heat player, was arrested for allegedly participating in a betting scheme where players faked injuries to manipulate gambling outcomes. Prosecutors claim he informed associates before a 2023 game that he would leave early due to a "sore foot." Bets worth over $200,000 were placed on him underperforming and when he exited the game after nine minutes, those bets paid off handsomely.

Meanwhile, Billups was charged in a separate case involving rigged poker games that defrauded victims of over $7 million. Authorities say the games, organized by mafia families including the Bonanno, Genovese, and Gambino clans, used technology such as contact lenses and X-ray tables to read marked cards. The FBI described it as "an elaborate scheme blending sports fame and organized crime."

Both Rozier and Billups were placed on immediate leave by the NBA, which issued a firm statement reaffirming its commitment to integrity. "Our game's credibility is non-negotiable," the league declared. FBI Director Kash Patel said, "We're talking about tens of millions in fraud and theft. This was a coordinated takedown across 11 states."

The investigation also ensnared retired NBA player Damon Jones, accused of participating in two manipulated games. U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. warned suspects during the press briefing, "Your winning streak has ended. Your luck has run out."

The scandal has reopened debates about the growing influence of legalized sports betting since its expansion in 2018. Once a celebrated bridge between sports and entertainment, gambling now faces renewed scrutiny as the line between competition and corruption blurs. The arrests signal a new era of accountability, one where even NBA legends aren't beyond the reach of the law.
