President Donald Trump paid tribute to conservative activist Charlie Kirk during his State of the Union address, prompting an emotional moment in the chamber as Kirk's widow, Erika Kirk, looked on.
During the Tuesday night speech, Trump paused to recognize what he described as the growing influence of faith among young Americans, crediting Kirk as a key figure in that movement. "I'm very proud to say that during my time in office, both the first four years, and in particular this last year, there has been a tremendous renewal in religion, faith,
Christianity and belief in God. Tremendous renewal," Trump said. Calling him a "great friend," the president told lawmakers that Kirk had played a significant role in the renewed interest in religion.
"So last year, Charlie was violently murdered by an assassin, and martyred, really martyred for his beliefs. His wonderful wife Erika is with us tonight," Trump said, prompting the audience to rise.
As cameras turned to her seat, Erika Kirk appeared visibly moved, wiping away tears while lawmakers applauded and some in the chamber began chanting her late husband's name. Trump acknowledged the difficult period she has faced, telling her, "You've been through a lot."
He went on to use the moment to call for unity, saying the country must come together in the wake of political violence. "In Charlie's memory, we must all come together to reaffirm that America is one nation under God, and we must totally reject political violence of any kind," Trump said.
Kirk, a conservative commentator and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed in September 2025 while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The incident occurred during a campus Q&A session that had drawn a large crowd, including protesters.
Following his death, tributes poured in from political allies and supporters. Trump had previously announced the news on social media shortly after Kirk was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Erika Kirk attended the address as one of the president's invited guests. Since her husband's death, she has stepped into a leadership role at Turning Point USA, serving as CEO and chair of the organization's board.
The emotional tribute became one of the most talked-about moments of the evening, as the president's remarks blended remembrance with a broader appeal to condemn political violence nationwide.
