Charlie Kirk's widow, Erika Kirk, came face to face with her husband's alleged killer, Tyler Robinson, during a preliminary hearing in Utah on Monday, July 6.

It was the first time she and Kirk's parents had been in the same courtroom as the 23‑year‑old accused of fatally shooting the conservative activist last September at Utah Valley University.

The hearing, set to last five days, will allow prosecutors to present evidence to determine if Robinson should stand trial for aggravated murder and potentially face the death penalty. Donald Trump Jr. attended the proceedings, while Robinson's parents sat a few rows behind the Kirks.

Ahead of the hearing, Erika, Charlie's parents, and his sister released a joint statement: "Every court proceeding serves as a painful reminder of his death and the loss that has irrevocably impacted our lives and the lives of his children. We remain deeply grateful for the support, prayers, and kindness we have received. This outpouring has sustained us during the darkest days of our lives."

Prosecutors allege Robinson confessed in a note to his roommate, writing, "I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I'm going to take it." They also say DNA evidence links him to the weapon used in the shooting.

Robinson surrendered to police the day after the attack but has not yet entered a plea. His attorneys have tried to block the death penalty from being considered.

The courtroom is expected to see between 40 and 50 exhibits, including video footage of the shooting, witness testimony, and autopsy findings. Prosecutors argue the incident endangered others at the event, which could qualify as an aggravating circumstance under Utah law.

Charlie Kirk, who co‑founded Turning Point USA at 18 and led the organization until his death at 31, was shot while addressing a crowd of thousands. At his memorial service, Erika told mourners she forgave Robinson: "My husband, Charlie, he wanted to save young men, just like the one who took his life... I forgive him because it was what Christ did, and it's what Charlie would do."
