NBC has dismissed a security guard following a breach at the Today show's New York studio, where an intruder confronted anchor Craig Melvin.
The incident occurred on July 16 when Andrew Truelove, 41, slipped past security at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. According to reports, two guards were stationed at the entrance, but one briefly stepped away while the other failed to notice Truelove entering the restricted area.
He allegedly asked staff where he could find Al Roker before approaching Melvin and shouting a racial slur.
Melvin quickly alerted security, and Truelove was detained until NYPD officers arrived. He has since been charged with multiple offenses, including hate crime burglary, hate crime menacing, hate crime criminal trespass, and harassment.
NBC confirmed the breach in a statement, saying, "There was a security incident this morning at the TODAY show studio. An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A.
The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security. The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. There was no altercation, and no one was injured."
The network added that it is reviewing its security protocols and remains committed to ensuring the safety of employees, talent, and guests.
Melvin reassured viewers later that day, writing on Instagram, "Hey everyone. I've heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I'm doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out. I'm looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow."
Despite the alarming confrontation, the show resumed broadcasting within minutes, with Melvin and Roker back on air.
