The Asian Film Awards Academy has announced a major change to the format of its upcoming 19th edition, opting to suspend all competitive award categories and cancel the traditional red carpet ceremony. Instead, the 2026 event will take place as a scaled back gathering centered on the presentation of special honors. The decision comes in response to the deadly fire that occurred in Hong Kong last year and the lasting impact it has had on the local community.
According to the academy, the ceremony will be held in Hong Kong and conducted in what it described as a dignified and minimalist manner. Rather than celebrating winners through competition, the event will focus on recognizing selected individuals and contributions through non competitive awards. This marks a significant departure from the long standing structure of the Asian Film Awards, which have traditionally celebrated excellence across a wide range of pan Asian filmmaking categories.
The academy explained that the format adjustment follows what it referred to as the significant incident in Hong Kong last year and the broader social impact that followed. The move also aligns with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government’s decision to postpone official celebrations and encourage a restrained approach to public events in the wake of the tragedy. By adopting a more solemn tone, the organizers aim to show respect to the community during a sensitive period.
Dr. Wilfred Wong, chairman of the Asian Film Awards Academy, said the decision was made after careful consideration. He stated that given the current environment, a solemn and minimalist format was the most appropriate arrangement. He added that honoring filmmakers in a restrained manner was intended as a mark of respect to all sectors of the community affected by the incident.
While the changes are substantial, the academy emphasized that its core mission remains unchanged. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to supporting and promoting Asian cinema, noting that the awards have always aimed to recognize creativity, cultural exchange, and artistic excellence across the region. Since their founding in 2007, the Asian Film Awards have served as a key platform for celebrating achievements in pan Asian filmmaking and fostering connections within the industry.
The academy also expressed gratitude to filmmakers, partners, and supporters for their understanding and continued backing of the modified edition. It noted that collaboration and solidarity within the film community are especially important during challenging times.
