Present rivalries and past collisions hang over Red Bull's home Austrian Grand Prix as Formula 1 braces for the next round of Max Verstappen vs George Russell and more title-chasing drama at McLaren. Russell and reigning champion Verstappen finished first and second in Canada two weeks ago, with Red Bull protesting - in vain - the Mercedes win and accusing the Briton of unsportsmanlike behaviour.

Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli raised the biggest and most emotional reaction on Sunday when he came of age as a Formula 1 star by finishing third with a mature race for Mercedes at the Canadian Grand Prix. The 18-year-old rookie, who passed his road driving test earlier this year before the season began, became the third-youngest podium finisher in Formula 1 history.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem's chances of being re-elected unopposed as president of motor racing's world governing body increased on Wednesday when Spaniard Carlos Sainz Sr said he would not be standing for the FIA top job.  The 63-year-old double world rally champion, four-times Dakar winner and father of the Williams Formula 1 driver of the same name, said in May he was considering running against the Emirati in the December election.

McLaren will continue to let Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris race freely for the Formula 1 title but there will be some tough talks back at the factory after Sunday's collision in Canada. nNorris accepted the blame after hitting the rear of his championship-leading Australian teammate's car while trying to overtake in a battle for fourth place three laps from the finish.

The FIA has removed its head of sustainability, diversity and inclusion, Sara Mariani, in a controversial internal restructure that continues a pattern of high-profile dismissals under president Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s leadership.

Toby Venter, owner of the Kyalami Grand Prix circuit near Johannesburg, said on Wednesday that plans to upgrade the track to Formula One standards had been approved by the controlling body. He told reporters the venue that last hosted a F1 race in 1993 had been given the green light by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to implement design proposals.

In a race that started with intense strategy battles and ended with a dramatic final push, the #83 Ferrari 499P crossed the line first, giving the Prancing Horse its third consecutive Le Mans victory in the Hypercar era.
