Chelsea have stepped up their efforts to sign Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix after holding another round of encouraging talks over a potential transfer.
Negotiations between the two clubs have progressed in recent days, with discussions being led by the ownership groups. Sources close to the deal indicate that the latest talks have been positive as Chelsea continue their pursuit of the French centre-back.
Crystal Palace remain eager to keep Lacroix at Selhurst Park and have offered him a new contract. However, the 26-year-old is believed to be seeking a fresh challenge, opening the door for Chelsea to make their move during the summer transfer window.
Despite the player's interest in a switch, Palace are determined not to let him leave cheaply. The club are reportedly demanding at least £60 million before considering any sale. At the same time, they have already started identifying possible replacements in anticipation of a potential departure. Augsburg defender Chrislain Matsima is among the players being monitored as Palace prepare for every scenario.
Lacroix joined Crystal Palace from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in August 2024 in a deal worth up to £18 million. Since arriving in south London, he has established himself as a key figure in the Eagles' defence, making 98 appearances across all competitions. His consistent performances have enhanced his reputation as one of the Premier League's standout defenders.
Chelsea have made strengthening their defence a priority this summer and view Lacroix as an ideal addition because of his experience in English football. The France international, who represented his country at the FIFA World Cup, fits the profile the Blues are targeting as they continue to reshape their squad ahead of the new campaign.
The west London club are also making progress on another major signing, with a £117 million deal for Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers reportedly close to completion.
A successful move for Lacroix could also have implications for Chelsea's current defenders. Trevoh Chalobah's future at Stamford Bridge would become increasingly uncertain if another central defender arrives, especially with Serie A side Como continuing to show interest in securing his services.
