In an unexpected yet quintessentially amusing move, Will Ferrell has thrown his proverbial hat into the ring for PEOPLE's prestigious Sexiest Man Alive issue in 2024. The comedian is on a self-described "one-man campaign" to earn the cover spot typically reserved for Hollywood's hunkiest stars.

"At this point, I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll never get an Oscar nomination or win a Grammy," Ferrell said in an interview. "But Sexiest Man Alive? Well, I've got just as good a shot as anyone at that thing. Maybe better considering my raw sex appeal."

The 56-year-old star of comedies like Anchorman, Step Brothers, and Elf is leaning into his signature deadpan bravado. When asked about potential stiff competition from the likes of Idris Elba, Michael B. Jordan, or Timothée Chalamet, Ferrell simply scoffed.

"Sure, those guys have eight-pack abs and smoldering gazes, but I have a wig collection that would curl your toes," he quipped. "If this is truly about demonstrating a unique brand of sex appeal, then give me that cover. I was born for it."

While Ferrell's campaign may seem tongue-in-cheek, publicists confirm he is taking concrete steps to raise his profile and make PEOPLE's staff take notice. This includes renting strategically-placed billboards around Los Angeles and New York with glossy photos and the tagline "Comedians Have Sexy Appeal Too...Allegedly."

"You have to admire his commitment to the bit," said former SNL cast member David Spade. "Although I may have to launch my own steamy look book just to keep pace. This town's big enough for two Sexiest Men, right?"

Oddsmakers currently have Ferrell listed at 300-1 to win the honor, though his team claims those odds are dropping by the day. Online betting forums show a surge in $5 novelty bets being placed on the Old School actor.

For his part, Ferrell remains defiant in the face of the naysayers: "I may not have the chiseled jaw of an Idris Elba, but no one can smolder over a plate of spaghetti like me. The people want what they want, and I'm here to provide it."

PEOPLE'S editorial team has yet to officially comment on Ferrell's campaign, though they did release a statement saying "all candidates receive full consideration based on a proprietary mix of factors."

One prominent voice who has endorsed Ferrell's bid? His wife of 22 years, Viveca Paulin. When asked for a quote about her husband's chances, her response was simple: "Have you seen his naked belly jiggles? Incredibly sexy. This thing is in the bag."

Time will tell if Ferrell can defy the odds and make comedic history on the most prestigious "Sexy" list. But one thing's for sure - he's adding an unpredictable jolt of mirth into the usually hunky competition.
