U.S. water polo star Maggie Steffens is grappling with the unexpected loss of her sister-in-law, Lulu Conner, who died in Paris during the 2024 Summer Olympics. Conner, 26, had traveled to France to support Steffens, a three-time gold medalist, in her quest for another Olympic title. The news of Conner’s passing was confirmed by Steffens in an interview with the Associated Press on July 28, citing a “medical emergency” as the cause of death.

“She was so excited for the Olympic Games,” Steffens shared, describing her sister-in-law as “the light of the world” who brought joy and unity to everyone around her. Steffens, who married Bobby Conner in November 2023, expressed the deep shock and grief felt by her husband and his family, calling the event a “nightmare.”

In a poignant gesture to honor Conner, Steffens dropped a bouquet of flowers into the Seine River during the Olympics’ opening ceremony on July 26. She described the act as a way to feel Conner’s spirit close to her, providing some solace amidst the tragedy. The U.S. women’s water polo team, under coach Adam Krikorian, has rallied around Steffens, offering support and dedicating their games to Conner’s memory. Krikorian noted that Conner was “full of energy and so excited to be here and watch this team,” and emphasized that they would honor her by playing with energy and passion.

Adding a unique tribute, entertainer Flavor Flav, a fervent supporter of the U.S. women’s water polo team, received a special clock necklace from Steffens’ husband. The necklace, crafted by Conner, will be worn by Flavor Flav throughout the Olympics, symbolizing her enduring spirit.

The U.S. women's water polo team, demonstrating resilience and solidarity, began their Olympic campaign with a commanding 15-6 victory over Greece on July 27. They are set to face Spain in their next match on July 29.

Steffens, reflecting on her team’s unity during challenging times, emphasized the strength found in collective support. “Alone there are a lot of things you can’t do, but together the impossible seems possible,” she remarked, underscoring the importance of her team’s camaraderie.

The story of Lulu Conner’s untimely passing and its impact on the U.S. women’s water polo team has touched many, reminding us of the emotional journeys that often accompany athletic endeavors.
