Yerin Ha vividly remembers the moment she found out she had secured the lead role in Bridgerton. On Monday, September 30, Shondaland, the production company behind the popular Netflix series, released a YouTube video featuring Ha, 29, and her costar Luke Thompson, 36. In the video, the two actors answered questions about themselves and the show, giving fans insight into their experiences.
When asked how her friends and family reacted to the news, Ha shared the memorable story of where she was when she learned she had been cast as Sophie. "I was having breakfast with my mom at a café in Korea, and when I stepped outside to take the call, my mom instantly knew," Ha explained. She described her excitement as she jumped around the streets of Gangnam, a bustling district in Seoul, South Korea. Her mother, overcome with emotion, joined her shortly after.
"She came out crying, but then said, 'We have to go home, I think I have indigestion,'" Ha recounted with a laugh, fondly remembering the moment. "It was such a special experience to share with her."
Ha also recalled telling one of her closest friends via FaceTime, who was so stunned that she had to set her phone down, momentarily speechless but thrilled. "She was just like, 'Oh my God, you're on Bridgerton!'" Ha said, mimicking her friend's joyous reaction.
Reflecting on the support she received from loved ones, Ha expressed her gratitude. "It's so heartwarming to have people who genuinely care and cheer you on," she said. Her role in Bridgerton was officially announced in August, and on September 11, a 30-second teaser introduced her character, Sophie, on the show's X (formerly Twitter) account.
The teaser showed Ha in a room filled with Regency-era clothing, signaling the start of her character's journey. Season 4 of Bridgerton centers on Benedict Bridgerton (played by Thompson) and his love story with Sophie. The previous three seasons and the spinoff, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, are currently streaming on Netflix.
