attention as social media users were fooled by the realistic renderings of her in a stunning floral gown.
The singer took to Instagram to set the record straight, sharing the fake photos and jokingly stating, "Couldn't make it to the MET, had to work'. She also revealed a text message from her mother, who had been deceived by the AI-generated images,
commenting on her "gorgeous gown" and likening her to a float in the Rose Parade.
Perry playfully responded, "lol mom the AI got you, too, BEWARE". The incident highlights the growing issue of deepfake photos, which use AI technology to create highly realistic images that can be difficult to distinguish from reality. In recent years, deepfake technology has become increasingly accessible, leading to a rise in fake images circulating on social media.
Perry's experience is not unique, as other celebrities, including Rihanna and Lady Gaga, have also been the subjects of AI-generated photos purportedly taken at the MetGala. These instances underscore the challenges posed by deepfake technology and
the need for greater awareness of its potential misuse.
The use of AI to create fake images has broader implications beyond celebrity gossip. Recently, Perry joined 200 other artists in signing an open letter calling for tech platforms and streaming services to stop using AI to "infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists". The widespread circulation of AI-generated photos of celebrities attending events they did not actually attend highlights the need for vigilance in verifying the authenticity of images and information shared online.
As AI technology continues to advance, the issue of deepfake photos is likely to become more prevalent. It serves as a reminder of the importance of critical thinking and fact-checking in an era where the line between reality and fiction can easily be blurred.
