During her Las Vegas residency, Adele swiftly addressed a perceived criticism of LGBTQ+ Pride Month. While speaking between songs on June 1, an audience member’s shout caught her attention. "What was that? Did you just say 'Pride sucks?'" she responded from her piano bench. The crowd cheered as she continued, "Did you come to my f**ing show and just say that Pride sucks? Are you f**ing stupid? Don’t be so f**ing ridiculous. If you have nothing nice to say, shut up, alright?" Adele then resumed her performance.
In a later part of the concert, she addressed the start of Pride Month, saying "Happy Pride," while pointing towards the heckler, "Not to you, though." However, fans noted that Adele had misunderstood the comment. One fan wrote on X, "the guy was somewhere behind me and he said 'work sucks' not 'pride sucks.'"
Adele's swift rebuke is characteristic of her approach during her "Weekends With Adele" residency, which began in November 2022. She has a history of addressing unruly audience members. In July, she paused her show to criticize the trend of fans throwing objects onstage, and in another instance, she stopped to reprimand a security guard for bothering a fan.
The singer has a long-standing history of supporting the LGBTQ+ community. She celebrated Pride Month last year by wearing a rainbow flag dress and waving a Pride flag during a London concert. In June 2016, she dedicated her concert at Belgium’s Sportpaleis to victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, expressing, “The LGBTQA community, they’re like my soulmates since I was really young, so I’m really moved by it.”
Adele’s Las Vegas residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace continues through June 2024, after initially starting in November 2022 and being extended twice.
