Disney+ has announced the commission of a 90 minute-long feature-length documentary currently entitled Caroline, which examines the life and untimely death of former Love Island presenter Caroline Flack, who took her own life in 2020. The film is set to offer viewers a personal insight into the life of Flack and things that may have contributed to her early demise, such as her mental health issues.
The new movie, Her Life and Death, will include family and friends of Flack bearing personal testimony. Executive producers are Dov Freedman, Charlie Russell and Jessie Versluys for the production company, with Christian Collerton directing and Sophie Clayton-Payne producing. The documentary is a production commission of Sean Doyle, Executive Director, Unscripted Content, Disney+, and is an executive production of Gaby Aung, Senior Manager, Unscripted for the service.
Caroline Flack was a popular British television presenter who fronted a series of shows including The X Factor, Big Brother’s Big Mouth and the Brits. She won series 12 of Strictly Come Dancing in 2014, after being widely praised by judges for an almost perfect score in the final. Her sudden death in February 2020 sent shockwaves among her fans and had many talking about the tribulations of famous celebrities and their private lives subjected to the probing media.
Memorial to Ms. Flack and mental health awareness education has been established in the time since her death. In particular, the Berkshire, England annual festival Flackstock has so far collected more than $650,000 to charities focusing on issues related to mental health. Princess Beatrice demonstrated support for mental health awareness becoming a participant in July 2023.
It has also made UK shows on big names, ranging from court case “Wagatha Christie” to Spencer Matthews’ hunt for the whereabouts of his brother’s body on Everest. Making Caroline part of its team of documentary productions gives us evidence of the editorial role it maintains in showing powerful and emotional stories extracted from the reality.
No premiere date is set for Caroline. The documentary promises to be a sensitive, enlightening, and reflective look at Caroline Flack’s life, her struggles, and the wider conversation around mental health and media fame.
