Hulu has officially ordered a full series reboot of Prison Break, marking the franchise's return nearly two decades after its breakout debut. The new chapter comes from Mayans M.C. co-creator Elgin James, who will write, executive-produce, and direct the pilot episode.
Unlike the original, the upcoming show will introduce a new cast and storyline while remaining rooted in the same universe. Emily Browning will lead the ensemble as Cassidy, an ex-soldier turned corrections officer who accepts a job at one of the most dangerous prisons in America — a move that tests the limits of loyalty and survival. She's joined by Drake Rodger, Lukas Gage, Clayton Cardenas, J.R. Bourne, Georgie Flores, and Myles Bullock.
Hulu first commissioned the pilot in late 2024, and sources confirm that internal reception to James's script was "exceptionally strong." The streamer fast-tracked the project after renewed audience interest in the original Prison Break, which surged to the top of Nielsen's U.S. streaming charts when it re-appeared on Netflix last summer.
Elgin James is executive producing under his Sierra Drive banner alongside a trio of franchise veterans — Dawn Olmstead, Paul Scheuring, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz — all of whom helped steer the original Fox series. 20th Television, the studio behind the original, will once again produce.
The original Prison Break, starring Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell, premiered in 2005 and ran for five seasons, spawning a television movie and multiple spinoff properties across web, print, and gaming. It became one of Fox's defining hits of the 2000s, lauded for its serialized storytelling and international fan base.
For James, this marks his first major television project since wrapping Mayans M.C. in 2023. Known for his gritty realism and emotionally driven narratives, he's expected to bring a darker, character-centric tone to the reboot.
Production on Prison Break is set to begin in early 2026, with Hulu positioning the show as one of its cornerstone dramas for the upcoming year.
