Grammy-winning rapper Doja Cat publicly rebuked actor Timothée Chalamet for dismissive comments regarding the relevance of opera and ballet. In a viral TikTok video , the “Paint the Town Red” artist joined a growing chorus of high-profile figures, including Jamie Lee Curtis and Diane Warren, defending traditional art forms against claims of obsolescence.

The controversy stems from a February 2026 CNN-Variety town hall event in Austin, Texas, where Chalamet was discussing the future of theatrical cinema with his Interstellar co-star Matthew McConaughey. During the conversation, the Marty Supreme star expressed a desire to work in mediums with high contemporary audience engagement, stating, “I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive,’ even though no one cares about this anymore.” Though Chalamet quickly added “all respect” to those in those industries and joked that he had just “lost 14 cents in viewership,” the comments sparked immediate backlash from global arts institutions.

Christian Bale is preparing to return to theaters with his latest film The Bride, a science fiction story directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. As the film arrives in cinemas, the actor has been reflecting on an unexpected connection that some viewers have made between the new project and one of his earliest roles in Hollywood.

During a recent interview with BuzzFeed, Bale reacted with surprise when a journalist compared a scene in The Bride to his performance in the 1992 Disney musical Newsies. The actor laughed at the comparison but quickly pointed out that the two projects are very different in tone and style.

“I would never have thought anybody would relate Newsies to The Bride that is hysterical,” Bale said. “But wait, big difference. Newsies is a musical. This is not a musical.”

The Bride features a strong ensemble cast that includes Jessie Buckley, Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard. The film is directed by Academy Award winning actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, marking another collaboration between Bale and the Gyllenhaal family. While the story carries elements of science fiction, Bale explained that the moment that reminded some people of a musical performance was actually part of a dramatic and emotional scene rather than a choreographed number.

According to Bale, the movement in the scene comes from an intense burst of energy within the character rather than a planned dance routine. He described it as a powerful physical reaction tied directly to the story.

“This is something where it is just a ridiculously energetic expression, with possession,” Bale explained. “Which you will understand when you watch the whole movie, but it is not a musical at all.”
