Saturday turned out to be a great day for Max Verstappen as he secured pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix, his first time starting at the front of the grid in Barcelona.

Making the session even better for the Dutchman was the fact that his Red Bull teammate and world championship rival Sergio Perez didn't even make Q3, finishing 11th.

Despite Perez's struggles, Verstappen felt that the car was in brilliant shape.

"The car was really good, it was on rails and really enjoyable to drive today," he stated afterwards.

"I love coming to Barcelona, as I love the track and I love the fans.

While Max Verstappen was able to celebrate another victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, it was a frustrating afternoon for Checo Perez as he started at the back of the grid and could only progress to 16th.

The Monte-Carlo street circuit is notoriously difficult to overtake on and Perez really struggled behind slower cars, especially as many stayed out for longer than expected before pitting.

Mercedes has confirmed that it will debut its massive upgrade package in Monaco, next weekend, while Ferrari is not at all clear that it is the place to introduce the new suspension that was planned for Imola and could wait for the F1 Spanish GP, a week later.

There is expectation to see if they change the 'no sidepod' concept and return to a more conventional design and if it has the desired effect on the handling of the W14, which continues to suffer in braking and corner entry.

Sergio Perez won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday to become the first driver to win twice on the Baku circuit.

The Mexican Red Bull driver finished 2.137 seconds ahead of teammate Max Verstappen, championship leader with 93 points, but who saw his lead with Checo Perez narrowed to 87 points in the 2023 Formula 1 season.

In a video released by DAZN, Verstappen is seen talking to his engineers about losing time on a section of the track.

"What gear should I use in Turn 3? It goes right between seventh and eighth," the Dutchman asked over the radio. "Seventh, Max," they replied.
