The family of the late Eric Dane has expressed their disappointment following the actor’s absence from the televised “In Memoriam” segment during the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 15, 2026. According to reports from TMZ, sources close to Dane’s widow, Rebecca Gayheart, revealed that while the family was “saddened” by the omission, they are choosing to focus on the overwhelming support they have received from fans.

Dane, who passed away on February 19, 2026, at the age of 53, died from respiratory failure following a courageous and highly public battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Despite his decades-long career and recent advocacy work, his face did not appear during the live broadcast’s tribute to industry legends lost over the past year.

“It was a year of profound loss for the industry,” a source close to the family told TMZ, noting that the family understands the difficult time constraints the Academy faces each year. However, the snub sparked immediate backlash on social media, with fans of Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria calling the move “disrespectful” given Dane’s impact on the cultural landscape.
